Little-Rena's News

Posted by Little-Rena - November 15th, 2023

A few months back, I had a great idea of making a game with Chat-GPT and the graphics with DALL-E. this was an experiment to see how useful it was for someone who has no experience with Javascript, but a basic understanding of programming.

I did run this by @TomFulp before hand, to make sure it was all okay to submit to the portal, and I also enlisted the help of @Olskoo to do the Newgrounds API intergration because I couldn't work it out, and I don't think Chat-GPT would have stood a chance.

The game I had a concept for, which I gave to Chat-GPT, and it produced a base structure, and the bones of the game. Over time, I would ask it to fill in parts to add function to the game, such as the generation of planets, the UI elements, and other parts. The only part I played was putting the code into place, like the simple monkey brain I am.

However, when actually getting things to work, Chat-GPT suffered from what could only be described as Computer Senility, fans of Red Dwarf will note that the ships computer, Holly suffers from this affliction. It had a terrible habit of forgetting what the game was doing, what the assigned variables were, and getting stuck in debug loops.

Multiple times, I would have to start from scratch because it just painted itself into a corner, and I couldn't help, because I had no idea what I was doing either, the old saying of the blind leading the blind, nither of us were going to be able to debug the problem.

Another issue I ran into was the character limit for input, so the game came to a conclusion once I couldn't paste the whole code in anymore. I'm not sure if this is a limitation of the free Chat-GPT or not, but there we go. I could have seperated the code into different files, however, again I had no idea what I was doing, and I tried to go down this route with Chat-GPT to do it, however, it was unable, and ended up in a debug loop of hell.

Chat-GPT would also sometimes just stop when giving an output, so you'd say "continue" and it would continue, however, it was 50/50 if it had remembered what code it had written before it stopped, to what was coming next, it was a mess, and frustrating.

The easier part was the art, you just input some words, and get an outcome, though I will say, the mines look more like birthday cakes. I'm not a fan of using AI art for anything outside of personal projects, generally I am more than happy to pay an artist for their time. The words for the description, and in game were also generated by Chat-GPT, and that's probably one of it's better uses, even though it is a pack of lies.

In conclusion, the outcome is a playable game, it sort of matches the vision I had, and for that, it would be a great basis to pass onto a human as a proof of concept to build a game from, with a decent game loop, and have more of a purpose to it. Currently, it is bare bones, an experiment of a monkey brain, and a senile AI.

What did I learn from this experiment though? That AI could be a great tool for what I mentioned above, and for those with an understanding of programming to get it to do some of the more tedious work for you, but you would then be better off debugging it yourself, or getting someone else to look over the code, else you may also end up in debug hell.

You can check out the project below, and please give me your thoughts on this experiment, I am not looking for an ethical discussion, personally I believe the art, and programming would have been better if I had run it all past a human. The biggest ethical issue is shovelware, but that has always been an issue, asset flipping, and dodgy labour.

I would also like to invite @Olskoo to give his thoughts, as he saw the code! I may also release the code to supporters of Newgrounds in future.

Thank you for reading my essay, if there are any teachers, please give me a grade, I hope I pass.

Hello!

Everyone seems to be doing one of these recaps, so I shall do so as well, partly as a bit of a time away from putting together this years BBS Awards submission, which will be released tomorrow, or in a few days, depending how well I feel. Last year, I kicked off the year with the BBS Award Results.

And my submission for Flash Forward 2022 got the Honorable Mention - Oldschool Award and won first in the Best Games of February, yet, because it wasn't OC content, I didn't win the money! I'm not mad, I don't own the rights to Putin, or Russia, though things would be better if I did.

I was also honoured that one of my terrible voice clips got remixed, and added into a game.

When Halloween rolled around, I submitted something in every category, but, I was unable to win anything. You can check out my recap of that here. I can only assume that the contest was rigged, as I didn't even win anything for "Best Halloween Newspost" or "Best NG Dumb Entry".

I did submit a fair number of other works through the year, and helped @DVa-Clock with the Clock Crews Flash Flood in February. Please do check out my other works, should you wish, or don't, most would recommend against it. I rounded out the year with the General BBS Sketch Collab Shitpost 2022, a parody of the main Sketch Collab.

Thank you very much for reading, have a happy new year, and here's to many more on Newgrounds!

The other is HAPPY FAMILY organised by the wonderful @Kolumbo who I have known for some time, it was a fun concept, and a great role!

Hello,

I am Little-Rena, here to wish you a happy Clock Day, and look towards many great years to come! Newgrounds really seems to be in another golden age right now, so why not take this time to get to know the Clock Crew? Here is the website, incase you don't know it! Also, become a supporter, help out Newgrounds, go on, click the link and put some money down, you know you want to!

Now, sales pitch over, time to intoduce you to my two submissions for Clockday.

Clocks of the BBS, a collab of BBS users

D.Va Clock and the Quest for Flash 8, a great AAA title, for free!

And if you are one of them loonies who thinks that I am also D.Va Clock, here is Das Twenty-One Second Collab

As for my favourite Clock Day submission so far? Well, I mean, they are all amazing, like:

FFFFFF-F: Additional F, it has drama, twists, and turns

Medic's Magnum Opus, for those who love art

OTB - Powder Keg because OTB is always a good time

But I mean, really, when it comes down to picking a favourite, with no bias, it has to be Untitled-4.fla

Enjoy the rest of Clock Day, and see you on the flip side, or something innit!

Wow! It has finally spun on me, I have become User of the Day! Today, some of you will now just discover who I am, and the content I have made, then wish you hadn't!

But now, I shall give a speech, I have worked for years on this speech, I knew this day would one day come, so here we go.

Firstly, I would like to thank my parents, for making me who I am today, I also want to thank my friends, and enemies, for also making me who I am today, and I'd like to thank your mother too, with whom we had very good relations. We would go to the park, and play chess, feed the birds, then I'd take her back to the care home you left her in. Shame on you.

I will now share some of my submissions that I really enjoyed making.

If you have looked at all of those, and do not need to go to the hospital, congratulations! You have passed, now I shall share some of my favourite submissions!

And that I think about covers it, I would also like to thank all of the moderators, and staff who help keep this place going, because without it, how would you, and I be able to share such creations with the internet? No other website is like Newgrounds in that regard!

Anyway, enough about me, thank you for stopping by, and enjoy the rest of your day!

Hello fans of the BBS awards! I shall once again be hosting them this year, as you may know, you can go and view the results of last years here.

I will be returning to flash, with Ruffle emulation, as it's not too complicated, Ruffle won't have a hard time loading it up for your viewing pleasure! Now onto the run down of the happenings, so you can stay in the loop!

This is a copy and paste of the first part of my latest BBS post, but I am putting it here on my userpage to keep track, as who knows what will go down in the BBS! And because I will try to update the links in this post for you to click on when the time comes!

Thank you for being here, and making Newgrounds great!

I am terrible at making titles, but I'll tell you what I am also terrible at, getting round to reviewing things! I am making my way through all the List Jam games that came out, slowly, very slowly, but I will get there! If you want to check out all of the games, click here, and be taken to the collection! I am also very happy that my game, Just Press Y, won! I mean, every entry won, but don't take a victory away from me, I don't win often! Below is my amazing game!

And if you want to help me make more amazing creations, you can give me money innit, I wouldn't recommend it though, I'd only waste it on booze, and video games, rather than actually learning how to improve at programming, or animation!

The last thing I am going to raise is the Trailer Summer Animation Jam, which is going on, which I have of course entered, and hoping to keep my losing streak of 0 points! You can see my entry below.

Thank you for reading my ramblings, and enjoy the rest of your day!

It has been 20 years since the amazing submission B graced Newgrounds, and it's a real day to celebrate for Newgrounds as a whole! The Clock Crew are an amazing bunch of people, which a very long, and interesting history! Today is a day where you may see some great submissions, from many well known faces, and hopefully some new ones too!

I am personally thankful to the Clock Crew because without Clock Day, I may have given up on Flash, as my first two submissions to Newgrounds got blammed, which was pretty sad, but my third made it! And that gave me the boost I needed to keep going, so I owe a debt to the Clock Crew, here is my 2006 submission if you wish to see it.

And now onto today, and the things I have made for the 20th Clock Day, first it was yesterday, where I made the amazing alt collab, with many alts, many haven't been touched in years.

Then there's my sequal to the amaing Farting Strawberry Clock, this time, you need to help him pee! And @StrawberryClock senpai even played it! <333

Finally is the Clocks of the BBS, which I started in 2019, and this one had a lot of participents, and some amazing works of art! I am jelous of the talent that is on this website, but also proud that so many people took part in a project of mine! I wish I had anticipated so many people joining, I don't think I did the works justice, but I hope everyone enjoys it!

You can also go onto the thread here to look at everything, some people posted after the deadline (sorry!!!).

Thank you for reading, and have a very happy Clock Day! There are some good movies, and games that have been released, or will be released!
